Energy Audit
What is an Energy Audit?
IS A TOOL THAT ALLOWS ORGANIZATIONS TO KNOW WHERE THEY STAND WITH RESPECT TO ENERGY USE
An energy audit is a systematic procedure that allows us to understand the actual energy usage in a company (building, group of buildings, industrial facility or operation, or a private or public service), so we can identify and quantify potential savings, and develop a final report with the main improvement proposals at an efficient cost.
At Gloval, we conduct energy audits following the guidelines set by the UNE EN 16247 standard:
- We start with updated, measured, and verifiable operational data on energy consumption.
- We conduct a detailed examination of energy consumption.
- We propose improvement measures based on profitability criteria and cost analysis, adapting to the needs of each client and delving into the aspects that interest you the most.
Who needs an Energy Audit?
MANDATORY FOR ALL LARGE COMPANIES (NOT SMES) EVERY 4 YEARS
According to Spanish Royal Decree 56/2016 of 12 February, that incorporates the Energy Efficiency Directive 2012/27/EU, energy audits are required every 4 years from companies and consolidated corporate groups with over 250 workers or a turnover of over 50 million euros and a balance sheet of over 43 million euros, but not from micro-enterprises and SMEs.
How do we do an Energy Audit?
WE APPLY TOOLS AND PROCEDURES RECOGNIZED BY THE MINISTRY OF DEVELOPMENT AND FOR THE ECOLOGICAL TRANSITION.
01
Initial meeting
We identify the parties to be involved and the functions to be performed, the scope or limits of the audit and the level of detail.
The level of participation of the building occupant and a visitation forecast are established.
02
Data collection and analysis
We gather the necessary documentation to describe the installations and to know the most relevant energy consumption elements of each installation.
We analyze the data set obtained and evaluate whether it is sufficient to continue the process.
03
Inspection
We inspect the site, collect operational data, and perform the necessary measurements.
We verify the operational and maintenance status of the existing facilities and analyze the feasibility of potential energy efficiency improvement measures.
04
Analysis and conclusions
We prepare a clear and concise report with all the tasks performed and a detailed account of the main recommended measures.
Presentation to the client with an explanation of the obtained results, addressing any questions. This way, the client will be able to make informed decisions regarding both the appropriateness of use and future investments.
Frequently Asked Questions
The Energy Saving Certificate (CAE) is an electronic document that guarantees that, after carrying out an energy efficiency action, a new final energy saving equivalent to 1 kWh has been achieved. Thus, if an action is undertaken that implies a new annual saving of 1000 kWh, 1000 CAE can be obtained. This instrument makes it possible to monetize energy savings, recovering part of the cost of investments in energy efficiency, since the end user will be able to receive a consideration if he sells the savings obtained for subsequent certification through the CAE System.
The CAE system is a free market, so there is no fixed price for each CAE obtained, however, 1 CAE could be estimated between 0.08 and 0.12 €. In other words, an annual saving of 1000kWh of final energy could be valued at €1,200.
Even if you are not obliged to do so, it is always a good idea to carry out an energy audit:
- Improve operating costs: finding out what elements or factors influence your energy consumption will allow you to identify savings possibilities.
- Adapt the use of the facilities to the real existing needs, reducing consumption without losing comfort.
- Evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of implementing certain measures.
- The energy audit includes an energy certificate, which is valid for 10 years.
- Improve your company’s image by committing to social responsibility, care for the environment and efficient resource management.
According to article 2 of RD56/2016 it is only mandatory for large companies.
However, the energy audit is a recommendable tool in some cases, for example:
- As an action prior to the rehabilitation process, becoming the main tool to develop an effective energy strategy in these processes.
- When there is a high energy consumption and, therefore, there is the possibility of obtaining significant savings, both at energy and economic level.
The Energy Certificate provides information on the energy consumption and CO2 emissions of a specific property/building/home/premises. It is valid for 10 years (5 in the case of G rating).
However, an energy audit comprehensively analyzes the energy performance of the building, taking measures of consumption, proposing improvements and evaluating the cost of these, as well as the return on investment.
Kick-off meetingImplementing the proposed improvement measures is not mandatory, however, it is recommended as they will help to improve operating costs and make the activity more energy efficient.
